Atomic Bomb Droppings on Japan

Two bombs dropped- Fat Man and Little Boy.
August 6th 1945 city of Hiroshima was target city of first bomb. Three days later Nagasaki was second target
Quarter of a million people killed. Atomic bomb equivalent of 20,000 tons of T.N.T, 9000 lbs
Monday 2:45 A.M B29 Bomber called the Enola Gay took off from Tinian 1500 miles away from Japan. 12 man crew
B-29 Super fortress (aircraft 44-86292), part of the 509th Composite Group
Modified plane to carry bomb. New propellers, faster opening bomb doors, stronger engine (Ian Warren)

There was a warning sent to Japan saying that if they did not surrender the war than we would drop the bomb on an area that was not the countries capital or a trading area. They refused.(Lee Grieco)

Barley made it off the runway, went all the way to the water’s edge
3 planes went before to get weather
2 escorted the plane with measuring devices
Enola Gay (named after colonial Paul Tibbets mother) had Little Boy

"Little Boy" was created using uranium-235 A radioactive isotope of uranium.
This uranium-235 atomic bomb, a product of $2 billion of research, had never been tested. Nor an atomic bomb dropped from a plane
Hiroshima, Kokura, Nagasaki, and Niigata four targets. Kyoto was the first choice until it was removed from the list by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson
August 6th 1945 8:15 A.M Little Boy was dropped
Exploded 1900 feet above city
Missed target, Aioi Bridge by 800 feet

WITNESS ACCOUNT: Staff Sergeant George Caron was tail gunnerDescribed the bomb’s explosion as "The mushroom cloud itself was a spectacular sight, a bubbling mass of purple-gray smoke and you could see it had a red core in it and everything was burning inside. . . . It looked like lava or molasses covering a whole city. . . ."
Cloud estimated to have reached 40,000 feet
A survivor described the damage to people:

The appearance of people was . . . well, they all had skin blackened by burns. . . . They had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you couldn't tell whether you were looking at them from in front or in back. . . . They held their arms bent [forward] like this . . . and their skin - not only on their hands, but on their faces and bodies too - hung down. . . . If there had been only one or two such people . . . perhaps I would not have had such a strong impression. But wherever I walked I met these people. . . . Many of them died along the road - I can still picture them in my mind -- like walking ghosts. (Ian Warren) From http://history1900s.about.com/od/worldwarii/a/hiroshima.htm

Even though there was much damage done the Japan still refused to surrender. That was when the US decided to drop "Fat Man"(Lee Grieco)

FAT MAN FACTS: Nagasaki Japan Aug. 9th 1945
Dropped by B-29 Bockscar
10,000 pound weapon. Dropped about 1800 feet over city 20,000 tons of T.N.T
. . Damage less because of hilly terrain of Nagasaki
Fat man was a implosion-type weapon using plutonium. Subcritical sphere of plutonium placed in the center of a hollow sphere of HE\ high explosive. Lots of detonators located on the surface of the HE. Fired simultaneously to produce a powerful inward pressure on the bomb increasing its density. Result was a supercritical condition and a nuclear explosion

The atomic bomb is based on the artificially induced phenomenon of nuclear fission.
The atoms of radioactive elements like Uranium or Plutonium are bombarded with slow neutrons, which makes them unstable and they split into lighter elements, releasing tremendous amount of energy
Along with the energy release, more neutrons are released in the process, which subsequently cause the fission of more atoms, triggering a 'Chain Reaction'.
The explosion of atomic bomb is the triggering of such an uncontrolled fission chain reaction.
Nuclear Energyplants or nuclear reactors are based on the same principle as the atom bomb. The only difference is that it uses a controlled fission chain reaction for peaceful use.
Discovered by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1938. First stomic bomb made by U.S. Dubbed as “the Manhattan Project”
Involved thousands of scientists, engineers, and technicians under the command of Robert Oppenheimer in Los Alamos. Made because the U.S though the Nazi’s had one
July 16th 1945 first successful test of an atomic bomb. Exploded in desert of Mexico (All by Ian Warren Period #7)
